Mecori

Mecori is a boutique Etna estate founded by Sicilians Sebastiano and Serena Vinci, whose shared passion for viticulture and winemaking began while studying together at university in northern Italy. Serena is from Catania, while Sebastiano hails from Marsala and has become known locally as "the oenologist with the hoe" for his hands-on approach to vineyard management—an uncommon practice in a region where winemakers traditionally focus on the cellar rather than the vines.

Believing that exceptional wines begin in the vineyard, the couple farm their 1.5-hectare estate organically. Their vineyard, planted in 1927, sits on Etna's northern slopes at 700 metres above sea level, where the cool, north-facing aspect preserves freshness and aromatic intensity. Inspired by Sebastiano's formative experience working alongside Paolo De Marchi at Isole e Olena, the winery follows a minimal-intervention philosophy, using stainless steel fermentation, extended ageing on fine lees and no oak to showcase the purity of the fruit and volcanic terroir.

The estate's name, Mecori, means "my heart" in Sicilian, reflecting the deeply personal nature of the project. Its flagship wine, Duo, is an elegant blend of 85% Nerello Mascalese and 15% Nerello Cappuccio, named both for the two grape varieties and the partnership behind the winery. Produced in tiny quantities of just 3,000 to 7,000 bottles annually, Duo has earned widespread acclaim, including the prestigious Best in Show – Italy award at the 2023 Decanter World Wine Awards for the 2021 vintage.
