About Pago de Carraovejas

Pago de Carraovejas is one of the most respected wineries in Ribera del Duero, known for its deep connection to tradition while embracing innovation. The story began in the 1980s with José María Ruiz, a Segovia restaurateur who dreamed of creating a wine that would perfectly complement his signature dish, roast suckling pig. In 1987, he planted the first vines on the steep hillsides of Peñafiel, and by 1991, the first vintage of Pago de Carraovejas was released, quickly gaining acclaim for its distinctive style.

The estate now spans over 160 hectares of vineyards, planted mainly with Tempranillo (Tinto Fino) alongside Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. At an altitude of around 850 meters, the vineyards benefit from poor, limestone-rich soils and extreme continental climate, giving the wines freshness, intensity, and balance. The winery is designed around gravity-flow winemaking, allowing fruit to be handled as gently as possible, and aging takes place in a careful mix of French and American oak.

Since 2007, the project has been led by José María’s son, Pedro Ruiz, who has expanded the vision through the Alma Carraovejas group. Today, the winery is celebrated worldwide, producing wines that capture the soul of Ribera del Duero while looking firmly to the future.
