About Roc de Cambes
Roc de Cambes is a distinguished winery located in the Côtes de Bourg appellation on the Right Bank of Bordeaux, France. Owned and operated by François Mitjavile, the estate is closely associated with his exceptional winemaking style, also evident in his acclaimed Saint-Émilion estate, Tertre Roteboeuf. François acquired Roc de Cambes in the late 1980s, recognizing the vineyard’s potential due to its south-facing slopes, limestone-rich soils, and proximity to the Gironde estuary, which provides a beneficial microclimate for grape ripening.
The estate spans around 12 hectares and is primarily planted with old-vine Merlot (about 80%) and Cabernet Sauvignon, producing wines that rival top Right Bank crus in quality despite its humble Côtes de Bourg designation. Mitjavile applies the same meticulous techniques used at Tertre Roteboeuf—low yields, long barrel aging in new oak, and minimal intervention—to create deeply expressive, age-worthy wines.
Roc de Cambes has earned a cult following among collectors and critics for its richness, complexity, and longevity. Though outside Bordeaux’s most prestigious appellations, its quality often surpasses expectations, making it a hidden gem for those seeking Grand Cru-level finesse without the label. The winery remains family-run, now with involvement from François’s children.
