Spier Frans K. Smit Red Blend is a sophisticated wine that offers the perfect balance of power and elegance. Produced by one of South Africa’s most renowned wineries, this blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec, and Cabernet Franc is a true masterpiece. The wine boasts a deep ruby color with aromas of blackcurrant, cherry, vanilla, and spicy oak. The palate is rich and complex with flavors of dark fruit, tobacco, and chocolate. The tannins are firm, yet velvety, leading to a long and satisfying finish. This wine pairs well with hearty dishes such as roasted meats, stews, and aged cheeses.

Tasting Notes

The 2017 Red was made with grapes handpicked on the slopes of Helderberg — arguably the best place in South Africa to grow Bordeaux varietals. Forming 50% of the blend, majestic, mysterious Cabernet Sauvignon takes centre stage, with stellar Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot providing aroma and structure in memorable supporting roles. Offering dark fruits presence and traces of cigar box with tannins that are firm but amiably rounded.

The artistic Spier winery is located close to the South African town of Stellenbosch. The history of this beautiful and sprawling winery dates back to as early as 1692, which makes it one of the most ancient wineries in South Africa. Cellar Master Frances Smit joined the winery in 1996 and he is one of the major reasons for the transformation of this small Stellebosch unit into one of the award-winning, reputed wineries that it is today.

One of the collections popular in the Spier Winery is the Signature Collection. The wines in this range are made from the choicest of grapes that contain unique flavours are processed in such a way that their original character is retained in the wines. The cellars of this winery are designed in such a way that the grapes are fermented with as little external interference as possible. Fully open fermenters, barrels made from French Oak and the usage of ceramic eggs make the wine-making process as organic as possible.
