Tasting Note

Elegant with soft red fruit and characteristic notes of vanilla, cedar and clove with a lively edge. The nose offers red cherry and redcurrant, while the palate reveals sour cherry, coffee and spicy clove. The velvety texture is enhanced by refreshing acidity, while well-integrated tannins add structure. This fuller-bodied wine will stand up to rich dishes with strong Mediterranean flavours, such as braised and roast meats, tomato-based stews, mature cheeses and briny olives. Will bottle age well for five to seven years after bottling.

Product Notes

Steenberg Merlot is a red wine that originates from the picturesque Constantia Valley in South Africa. This wine is produced using 100% Merlot grapes, which are carefully selected and handpicked at the optimal stage of ripeness. This Merlot is then aged in oak barrels for 18 months, providing it with a smooth and well-rounded mouthfeel. With its deep ruby color and aromas of ripe black cherry, plum, and chocolate, Steenberg Merlot is a delight to the senses. On the palate, it is bold and full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a long, lingering finish. This wine pairs perfectly with red meat dishes, especially roasted lamb or beef.

About the Winery

Steenberg

Simon van der Stel granted Catharina Michelse's request in 1682 for a plot of land near the Ou Kaapse Weg by leasing her 25 Morgen. This is how the illustrious progenitor came into control of what is today known as Steenberg. Frederik Russouw purchased the land in 1695 and erected the U-shaped residence. From 1765 through 1801, Nicolaas and his wife owned the property. Daniel purchased the property after Nicolaas' death in 1802, and Johannes Adriaan Louw of Fisantekraal afterwards purchased it. Nicolaas Louw, the son of Johannes Adriaan, had a deep love for Steenberg. When he passed away in 1976, his three children shared in the property's inheritance because he entered farming right out of school. The Louw family still owned Steenberg up until 1990, when Johannesburg Consolidated Investments bought it and transformed it into the magnificent hotel and winery it is today.
