South America is a prominent wine-producing continent in the world. Uruguay, known for its ancient and premium wines, is the fourth biggest wine producer in South America. One of the highlights of Uruguayan wines is that they contain a unique freshness and character that you don’t usually find in the grapes in this continent. The maritime climate of Uruguay has definitely got something to do with this quality.  The cool climate in the capital city of Montevideo is one of the major reasons for the high-yields of grapes cultivated here.

Common grape varietals

Tannat is one of the most common grape varietals grown in this part of the world. Uruguay is no different. Tannat contributes to over 36% of the grapes grown in Uruguay; however, they are very different from the Tannat grapes grown in other countries like France. This is because this varietal grown in Uruguay is softer and riper than those grown in other countries. The other common varietals of grapes grown in Uruguay are Merlot, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Franc.

While the Tannat red wine is the signature wine of Uruguay, you will also notice that the country is famous for its white wine varietal of Albarino.  The wines made from Tannat, Albarino, Chardonnay, Tannat-Viognier blend and Chardonnay-Viognier blend are considered as some of the best Uruguayan wines in the world.

The Albarino varietal was introduced in Uruguay in the year 1954 by Spanish immigrants. By the late 1980s, the government of Uruguay took a lot of effort to improve the quality of its grape varietals and also market its winemaking process to the outside world.

Wine growing regions

Most of the wine-growing regions and vineyards of Uruguay are centred around the capital city of Montevideo. Here, the main areas where grape vines are grown are San Jose, Colonia and Canelones.
