About Pierro

Like many of Margaret River’s early winemaking pioneers, Pierro founder Michael Peterkin originally trained as a medical doctor before pursuing his true passion for wine. During the 1970s he completed the prestigious Oenology program at Roseworthy College and gained valuable experience at several leading Western Australian wineries, including Cullen, where he produced Australia’s first Semillon–Sauvignon Blanc blend. In 1980, Peterkin established Pierro and successfully balanced life as a country doctor with building one of Margaret River’s most respected boutique wineries, finally retiring from medicine in 2020 at the age of 72.

From the beginning, meticulous attention was given to vineyard development in the Wilyabrup sub-region of Margaret River. Peterkin planted his vines at significantly higher density than was common at the time, encouraging greater competition between vines and resulting in increased concentration and flavour intensity in the fruit. The gravelly loam soils of Wilyabrup, combined with cooling influences from both the Indian and Southern Oceans, create ideal conditions for producing wines with purity, freshness and vibrant natural acidity.

Pierro has become especially renowned for its Chardonnay and Bordeaux-inspired red blends, crafted in a refined and restrained style that emphasises vineyard character and regional expression. Today the winery continues to be led by Mike Peterkin alongside his son Nic, maintaining the estate’s long-standing commitment to precision viticulture and elegant winemaking.
