Tasting Note

APPEARANCE - Deep dark magenta with garnet edges. NOSE - The aromatics are floral and spicy; wild black cherry, violets and lavender with orange marmalade and intense smoked peppercorns. Finer nuances of cardamom and cocoa nib entwine with leather and oriental spices with undertones of briar and savoury licorice notes. PALATE - The palate is rich and juicy displaying satsuma plum and ripe black forest berry fruits of mulberry and blackberry overlaying cured charcuterie and smoked pink peppercorn. Oak notes of cinnamon and nutmeg, licorice and clove interlace with red mineral earthy notes, hints of orange peel and cedar bark. The tannins are chewy, yet silky with great texture and detail

Product Notes

Cape Mentelle Shiraz is a stunning red wine produced in Western Australia's renowned Margaret River wine region. This wine is deep ruby red in colour with a complex bouquet of dark fruit, spice, and subtle earthy notes. The palate is full-bodied and rich, with a plush texture and elegant tannins. The red fruit flavours are perfectly balanced with the pepper and spice notes, and the oak adds hints of vanilla and toast. The finish is long and lingering, with a superb balance of tannins, acidity and fruit sweetness. Cape Mentelle Shiraz is a beautiful wine that can be savoured now or cellared for years to come.

About the Winery

Cape Mentelle

The winery gets its name from a nearby Cape that was given that title by the French "Baudin Expedition," which mapped Western Australia's coast in 1801. The Cape was given the names of two prominent French scientists who resided in Paris in the early 1700s: geographer Edmund with his brother Francois-Simon Mentelle. In 1970, David Hohnen, a pioneer in the wine business, and his brothers Mark and Giles founded Cape Mentelle Vineyards. Merely 16 hectares of grapes were cultivated on what today is known as the "Wallcliffe Vineyard" when their incredible Cape Mentelle journey began. Red wines were initially the main focus, including a brazen Shiraz. The establishment of Cape Mentelle's sister winery, known as Cloudy Bay, by David Hohnen in 1985 marked a turning point for the development of white wines.
